Why are we fundraising?

Mika:
My family has a deep and personal history with cancer, and I have lost many relatives to it, including my brother. Experiencing that kind of loss at a young age shaped the way I see the impact this disease has—not just on individuals, but on entire families. It is something that has stayed with me and continues to influence the way I think about helping others.

Since I was 11 years old, I have been donating my birthday money to the hospital where my brother passed away. Even at that age, I felt a strong responsibility to try to make a difference in any way I could. Over time, that small act has become something much more meaningful to me, reinforcing my belief that even small contributions can have a real impact.

I truly believe that if everyone does their part, we can create meaningful change together. Through fundraising, I hope to support people who are not only battling cancer but also facing the financial hardships that often come with treatment. For those with terminal illnesses, I want to help ensure their final moments are filled with comfort, dignity, and support. This cause is deeply personal to me, and it continues to drive my commitment to making a difference.

Aetos:
Cancer used to be just a scary word I heard on the news, but then it hit way too close to home. Watching my grandma go through it was one of the hardest things our family has ever dealt with. Then there was my grandpa—there was actually a moment where his heart rate hit zero. It was the scariest thing imaginable, but somehow, he survived. Seeing them both fight so hard to stay with us really changed my perspective on how lucky we are to have the medical help that saved them.

Even though I’m so grateful my grandparents are still here, it’s been tough seeing so many other people I know lose their battles. It feels like cancer has taken way too many good people from my community, and every time I hear about another person getting sick, it just feels like a total gut punch. These aren't just names on a list; they’re friends and neighbors who should still be here hanging out with their families.
I finally realized I couldn't just sit around and feel bad about it anymore. Fundraising is my way of actually doing something and fighting back. I’m doing this to honor the people we’ve lost and to make sure more families get to experience the kind of miracle my grandpa had. Every dollar raised is a step toward making sure "heart rate zero" isn't the end of the story for someone else.
