Jam Kancer in the Kan is an awesome organization that is near and dear to our hearts. We're so happy to participate in this year's tournament to help bring some joy to our neighbors who need it the most.
Going through treatment, many families struggle financially while earning less money on Disability and trying to cover the cost of their medical care. As an Oncology Social Worker, I listen to the stories of patients each day as they talk about just making ends meet each month....leaving no room for any of the "extras".....That's where Jam Kancer comes in. I reach out to them often, and they always say YES! Sports tuition, dance classes, holiday meals and presents, nearly impossible to find video game systems, autographed jerseys from their favorite sports team....you name it, they've provided it.
My first encounter with Jam Kancer was when I requested help paying for my patient's daughter's Irish Dancing school. Within days, the entire year's tuition was paid in full. A few months later when the young girl made it to the World Championship in Vancouver, Jam Kancer paid for the family's trip to watch her compete. This year for the holidays, they provided presents for so many of our patients and their families. I packed up my car and delivered the gifts all over the local community in the days leading up to Christmas. Early on the 25th, I received a text from one of the families with a photo of their smiling kids sitting in a pile of presents....there was a simple message below that said, "Thank you for bringing happiness".
In reality, it wasn't me that brought happiness...I was just lucky enough to drive Santa's Sled to make the deliveries. The joy comes from this awesome organization that is funded by the generous people in my community that I'm lucky enough to call my friends and neighbors. Please help me find more ways to "bring the happiness" to families who could really use a smile.
